About
Inaugurated on 15 July 1926, the Grand Mosque of Paris was for decades the only mosque in mainland France. It stands in the Jardin-des-Plantes quarter of the 5th arrondissement. France commissioned it in recognition of the roughly 100,000 Muslim soldiers who died for the country during the First World War, and 450 craftsmen from North Africa built it between 1922 and 1926.
The building is Hispano-Moorish and Neo-Mudéjar in style: a 33-metre minaret, a 650 m² marble-paved courtyard laid out as a garden, a 500 m² prayer hall with 56 columns, mosaics, carved woodwork and calligraphy. The site also houses a library, a hammam and a café-restaurant. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1983.
Still an active place of worship, the mosque can be visited on your own or with a guide, from 9am to 6pm every day except Friday and Muslim holidays (€5 full price, €3 reduced). The entrance and car park are wheelchair accessible. During the German occupation it sheltered resistance fighters and Jewish families, some of whom were issued false certificates of Muslim faith. Home to the Institut musulman, it remains one of the leading institutions of Islam in France.
