Quran schools

Quran schools, known as a madrasa, maktab or Quran academy, teach Muslims of every age to read, recite and understand the Quran. Many are attached to a mosque, continuing one of its oldest functions: education has been central to mosque life since the earliest days of Islam, as our guide to role of the mosque in Islam explains.

What they teach

  • Quran reading and recitation, from the Arabic alphabet to fluent reading of the text.
  • Tajwid, the rules of correct pronunciation and rhythm when reciting.
  • Hifz, memorisation of the Quran, for those who wish to become a hafiz.
  • Arabic language and the basics of Islamic belief and practice.

For children and adults

Most schools run weekend or evening classes for children alongside the regular school week, and many now offer adult and convert classes for those starting later or returning to study. Fees are often modest, and sometimes waived for those in need, since teaching the Quran is widely seen as a service to the community. Formats range from small in-person circles to one-to-one and online lessons, so there is usually an option to fit a busy or newly arrived family.

Find classes near you

When choosing a school, ask about the teacher’s qualifications, class size, the method used and whether trial lessons are offered.
