A mosque opens its doors many times a day, every day of the year, which makes it one of the most intensively used buildings in any community, and one where thoughtful design pays for itself many times over. A sustainable, or green, mosque is simply one built and run to use energy and water wisely while remaining comfortable and dignified. This approach also sits comfortably with Islamic teaching, which discourages waste and extravagance. Design with the climate, not against it
The greenest savings are designed in from the start. A bioclimatic mosque works with its site rather than fighting it: study the sun, wind, terrain and existing trees before drawing a single wall. Favour a compact form over a sprawling one to reduce heat loss, and orient the busiest spaces, the prayer hall and classrooms, to catch gentle light, placing service rooms such as stores and plant rooms on the coldest side. Generous, well-placed openings on the sheltered facades bring in daylight and cross-ventilation, cutting the need for electric light and air conditioning, while external shading, canopies, roof overhangs, adjustable louvres, keeps summer sun off the glass.
Insulation, materials and energy
A well-insulated envelope is the foundation of a low-energy mosque: most heat is lost through the roof, walls and air leaks, so insulate generously, break thermal bridges, fit double glazing and choose light-coloured roofs and facades. Prefer local materials where possible. They respect the regional architectural language and cut the carbon and cost of transport. On top of an efficient building, add efficient systems: renewable energy suited to the site (solar water heating and photovoltaic panels are widely recommended, with wind, biomass or geothermal where appropriate), LED lighting, presence detectors in corridors and washrooms, and high-efficiency appliances. A larger mosque may justify a centralised control system to manage heating, ventilation, lighting and cooling by zone and by the hours the mosque is actually in use.
Water and wudu efficiency
Because ablution (wudu) is repeated throughout the day, water is a mosque's second great running cost, and its second great opportunity. Fit taps that limit flow or respond to infrared sensors, and choose robust, short-headed fittings that users are less likely to lean on. Harvest rainwater and recycle greywater, after proper filtering, for toilet flushing or watering the mosque's greenery. Just as important is hygiene: keep the toilets separate from the ablution area itself, provide well-ventilated wudu spaces that are easy to clean with non-slip floors, and ensure a steady supply of soap. These measures conserve water and protect worshippers' health without making wudu any harder. Comfort, access and stewardship
Sustainability includes making the mosque welcoming to everyone. Step-free access to the ablution and prayer areas, ramps with gentle slopes and rest landings, clear tactile guidance for visually impaired worshippers and generous circulation widths let elderly and disabled members take full part in the life of the mosque.
